Your Best Month Can Be the One That Breaks You

It sounds like a contradiction, because a record month is meant to be the reward for all the effort. But one of the most common ways a profitable, growing business runs into trouble is by growing too fast for its cash to keep up, and the best months are exactly when it happens.

What a big month does to your bank account

Winning more work means spending more, now. Wages, materials, stock, subcontractors, all of it goes out immediately to deliver the work. The revenue that justifies the spend comes back later, on whatever terms your customers pay: thirty days, sixty, sometimes ninety.

So the bigger the month, the wider the gap between the cash you have already spent and the cash you have actually collected. A business can be more profitable and more short of cash in the very same month. Profit does nothing to close that gap in the moment, because profit is earned on paper long before the money lands.

Why healthy businesses run out of money

This is the uncomfortable part. Businesses do not only fail because they are doing badly. Plenty run out of cash while doing well, because they are doing well faster than their working capital can support. Every new order is, in effect, the business lending its own money to fund its own growth, and interest-free lending to yourself still has to come from somewhere.

Funding growth on purpose

The answer is not to turn down the good months. It is to stop being surprised by them, and to fund growth deliberately:

Do that, and growth stops being a threat to your cash and becomes something the business can actually absorb and build on.

If your growth is outrunning your cash, that gap is measurable before it becomes a crisis. PeakRatio helps founder-led SMEs fund growth on purpose. Start at https://peakratio.co.uk
