Is Your Online Presence Costing You Business You Don't Know You're Losing?
Most owner-managers know their reputation on the ground. Fewer have checked what a stranger sees online before they ever call: an out-of-date review, a stale service list, a website that hasn't caught up with the business itself. That gap costs quietly, in lost enquiries now and in what a buyer notices later.
What a stranger sees before they ever call
Running a business fills every hour there is. Checking what it looks like from the outside, the Google listing, the reviews, the website copy, rarely gets the same attention as the work itself. In the diagnostics I run, a stale listing or a review left unanswered for months is one of the most common findings, sitting right alongside financials that are perfectly healthy. It isn't a failing. It's simply what happens when the priority is the work in front of you, not the version of the business a stranger meets first.
Why it costs more than it looks like
A search that ends on a competitor, an enquiry that's never made, a call that goes elsewhere, none of it shows up as a line in the accounts. It shows up as a quieter month than expected, with no obvious cause. Across the businesses I look at, the online gap is rarely about a lack of reputation. It's a lack of maintenance, nobody's job to keep the listing current once the website went live.
Why it matters twice as much if you're ever selling
A buyer doing due diligence checks online before they check anything else, often before the first real conversation. What they find there either supports the numbers or undercuts them before the conversation has even started. Keeping the online picture current does the same job either way, it wins enquiries today, and it's one less question a buyer has to ask later.
What to check first
Three things worth five minutes. Your Google Business listing: is the address, the services and the opening hours still accurate? Your most recent review: has it been replied to, and does it read like the business you run today? Your website's service list: does it match what you actually do now, or what you did when it was built?
PeakRatio's Saleability Diagnostic looks at online presence alongside cash, ownership and market position, so an owner sees the business the way an outsider actually does. The free Ratio Check is a five-minute starting point if you want a first read before anything else.
